This is me reading a poem I wrote for a Michael Jackson tribute at my college that won first place.
"An Ode to the Moonwalker"
By: Steven Taliaferro
Gaga, P!nk, Ke$ha are all pop
Nelly and Kanye are all hip hop
We call them all masters
The creme de la creme
Our ears and our iPods woship all of them
But you were the one who started it all
Your talent and magic made all our hearts stall
Your music was foreign and to some it was strange
But all great artists make their mark with a change
Who'd believe that little kid from a town called Gary
Would grow up to become the meaning of "legendary"
Even though it was rough, the childhood that you had
How you grew up without a loving hug from your dad
But with your four brothers you travelled lengths of great height
Then a good man named Quincy helped you gain new sight
Then you thrilled us with "Thriller" and you told us to "Beat It"
When we all had the blues, you knew how to treat it
With a silky smooth voice that said "It's alright.
"Life is good to everyone, the black and the white."
Yes, you certainly did a whole deal of great
That's why June 25th will always be a sad date
The day that you left us and joined the good Lord
Was the day we were reminded of how you were adored
That's why we'll all miss you with great love and great passion
Hope you're happy, wherever you are, Michael Jackson
In loving memory of the king of Pop
1958-2009
