Jeff Smith was considered the slow poke of the three top I-Backs. Although he ran 80 yards for a touchdown on his first carry of the '82 season vs. Iowa. Miles was the fastest, he and DuBose were both 10.4 hundred meter sprinters. But Miles had held the school stopwatch record average in the 40 yard dash at 4.33 seconds for 5 attempts, with a personal best of 4.28. as a Freshman. That was a an all time record until Senior Irving Fryar broke it running 4.23 in Winter conditioning of 1983.

In 1983 as a Sophomore everyone thought that Paul Miles would be the next great Nebraska back. He had blazing speed and dazzling moves. But he got hurt early during the '84 season I think shoulder and ankle problems and missed a bunch of games. Doug DuBose tore it up as Jeff Smith also was hurt and out for awhile, slowed down with ankle, knee and hamstring trouble

    Continued.

Then Pac 10 commisoner Tom Hansen summed this case up perfectly. He said "After going to the Supreme Court to get therights to televise their games They tried to tell us we didn't have the rights to televise our own home games. I always found that terribly ironic" Bu 1985 the 2 sides came to an agreement allowing home rule for the telecasts which continues to this day in college football.

There was controvesey over this game, namely the fact that CBS was televising it. That year was the 1st year after the NCAA control over TV games was overturned by the Supreme Court. The CFA which the Big 8 was part of did not want there t eams appearing on the other sides package. The Big 10/Pac 10 objected and after they failed to negotiate a settlement the Big 10/Pac 10 filed a lawsuit and won with the court basically saying the home team had rights to there home games.

What else can u say other than total utter complete domination. Hard to believe just a week or so later this Nebraska team would lose 9-17 to a syracuse team it beat 63-7 in 1983.
