Lowndes Versus Flying wheel - Bathurst

An endurance round of the V8 Supercars, where competitors race for 1000Kms about 5-6 hrs. Drivers change throughout the race.

The race is held at the famous NSW, Australia circuit: Mt. Panorama, Bathurst. A track which reaches 800 metres above sea level at the peak, the track is a scenic route over a mountain, 6.8 kms of pure speed and concrete walls. Cars reach 300 km/h at the main straight.

This video shows an incident in the first half of the race. Craig Lowndes rounds the 3rd corner after Paul Dumbrell hit the wall, a wheel off Dumbrell's car is seen bouncing across the track, Lowndes pulls to the left, but it hits a wall before smacking the windsheild.

CL should never have been allowed to continue the race sans both windscreens. V8Supercars are "closed" tin tops.

Imagine if that wheel had hit him when his car didn't have front windscreen!

It wasn't the window that stopped the wheel hitting him, it was part of the roll cage which is designed to stop things like this occuring. He was at a massive disadvantage with the amount of time spent in the pits reparing the Watts linkage before this and then more laps while doing these repairs.

Not sure if you saw the entire race or not, but a Commodore's bonnet flicked up and smashed Holdsworth or Skifleet's (cant remember which) windshield and they did the same as Lowndes.

The race was red-flagged, meaning it reverted to the previous lap's standing. At the time they were leading. That's hardly being "gifted" a race.

Correct me if I'm wrong wern't 2 of Skaifes victories with the master Jim Richards in the $600,000 steroid abusing Datsun GTR in 91,92?

A trained monkey could have won in that car!

In 92 it didn't even cross the finish line like Dick Johnson and John Bowe,it was crashed

up the mountain but was still gifted the race.

In V8 supercars Skaife has only bagged 3 just like Lowndes,on 888's recent form I think CL is in line for another 1 with Wincup this year
