1972 mega hit for this power pop band. Intro, Verse and Chorus in Part I, Bridge and outro in Part II. In standard tuning. Sorry for the slightly distorted audio quality; recording software was reloaded on my computer and defaulted to some bad settings.

  • Andy Powell is my all time fave guitarist, followed closely by the underated/unrecognized Tim Renwick. In 1980 I played with a singer/Pianist/guitarist who was an Eric Carmen FANATIC! We are still friends! You and I have much in common. We should talk off YouTube. Are you in New England? I am currently in Boston.

  • @thetoneking Unfortunately I live in New Jersey (unfortunately because it's far from Boston and it's also not my favorite venue. Send me private message with your contact details and I'd be happy to get in touch. Cheers.

  • I am also an "inside string guy", so I get what you mean. Thanks for understanding. I avoid the high E string in general, even after 35 years. Still, the expanse it opens is huge. In reality, Wally Bryson plays it live now different from the actual recording. The original starts with and expansive reach: Open A string with the top e fret12, then A4 in the same position , and finally A natural, again in the same place. Reminds me of Blowin' Free by Wishbone Ash, but heads way off from there...

  • @thetoneking Wow, you know a lot about this song! Glad you commented. I love Blowin' Free btw; saw Andy Powell live in June and I was sitting about six feet from him, so I learned a bit there.

  • Intro is just how I always played it! - - - Till I saw Wally. His way is quite different. You can pick it up by watching any of the live vids on youtube. Applaud you for teaching this great song, but the intro is the obvious way, not actually the way it was recorded. Hate when people call me for tiny things, so not trying to be a jerk, you made a nice instruction, but I would suggest referring to Wally's playing, and consider an update. Just trying to be constructive, really.

  • @thetoneking In short, I think people can be safe playing them the way they're most comfortable, knowing they're playing the right notes, but if they want to play it exactly as Bryson does, have a point. A benefit of playing them in the higher position is that you can pick up the open A string, which sounds kind of nice. ;-)

  • @thetoneking I don’t think you’re trying to be a jerk. After your comment, I looked at the live vids. They are pretty poor quality, but he does to be play the opening A chord riff and final D on the 9th and 10th frets, respectively. That would be X-X-X-9-10-12, X-X-X-9-10-10, X-X-X-9-10-9 | X-X-X-9-10-9, X-X-X-11-10-10, X-X-X-11-10-10. Those notes would be identical to those I play – different position but same voicing. I do these mostly by ear, so I can see how this could happen.

  • @Believerification Ha! Nice catch. I clearly can't play and call out chords at the same time. The C chord is, of course, at the eighth fret. The A minor, however, is at the fifth fret. ;-)

  • C barre chord on the EIGHTH FRET, then A minor at the seventh fret

  • @markhxxx I can put it on the list. Might take a while to get to it, because the list is growing. Feel free to bug me about it if it doesn't happen in a reasonable amount of time.;-)
