@danielwachholz You're right. The 4th reason would simply be that the Nazis and Communists were constantly fighting and killing one another in the 1920s and early 1930s. They were street fighting thugs that most likely were fighting simply because they enjoyed inflicting pain.

@brushcreek42 You quoted three possible reasons for the murder. They are only theories, and mutual excludent, by the way. There is another one, much more simplier: a lot of people died in late 1920s and early 1930s struggles, both sides. Both were idealistic. One of them was Horst Wessel. People blame him for his death, because its inconceivable a nazi been murdered withouth that beastie guilt. Simple as that.

@adalbertones From what I read on the internet no one knows the exact reason he was shot. It could have been over his prostitute girl friend or a revenge shooting by the communists for his alleged involvement in the murder of a 17 year old communist or his long overdue rent. None of those reasons seem like pure idealism to me.

I could take all the propaganda and dismiss most of it. But when I saw the news-real footage of the casket being attacked by folks, well I lost all sympathy then.
If I were alive during that time, I might have joined the party just because of this act.
Not a great thing to say, but I was so revolted by people desecrating a funeral that I might have done that.
