ACTUALLY, books were not used as a means of protection but as a means of stabalizing your weapon when firing. You can tuck your elbow/arm on top of the book and use it as a stabalizer. We do this all the time in the Marines.

No... a sword can be used for both. Its all about the form. Besides, the sword they are using is pretty damn good at stabbing.
