I took the easy route to share this song that I couldn't find on YouTube, except for an excellent cover by a guy who modified it a bit to fit him, always recommended.
I first heard this in a head shop on Yonge Street in Toronto in the summer of 1973, it was one of the coolest experiences of my life. We were there for Mariposa on the Island. Toronto needs to bring Mariposa back to the Island. Two days later I bought the LP and have been hooked on Steve ever since.
Toronto, invite Mariposa back to the Island and this time I'll bring more money.

Somebody Else's Troubles
(Steve Goodman)

Yesterday I went downtown and saw an old-time picture show
And the hero got a pie in the face;
He didn't like that, and he stormed around the screen.
Everybody else was laughin' in that place.

Cho: That's 'cause it ain't hard
To get along with somebody else's troubles,
And they don't make you lose any sleep at night.
Just as long as fate is there bustin' somebody else's bubbles,
Everything's gonna be all right.
Everything's gonna be all right.

Tell me, Did you ever have to pay for something that you didn't do,
Did you ever figure out the reason why?
When the doctor says this is gonna hurt me a lot more than this hurts you
Did you ever figure out that, that's a lie?

And I saw the boss come a-walking down along that factory line,
He said, "We all have to tighten up our belts."
But he didn't look any thinner than he did a year ago,
And I wonder just how hungry that man felt.

Now, I asked that undertaker what it took to make him laugh
When all he ever saw is people crying,
First he hands me a bunch of flowers that he'd received on my behalf,
And said, "Steve, business just gets better all the time."

  • This is the song that introduced me to adult empathy. It is severely lacking in today's anti- society.

  • Yes, that is Bob Dylan. I first heard this song in the early 1980's (the Reagan era) and called it the "Republican National Anthem". Just as true today. By the way, did you know who Steve's high school classmate in Chicago was? Hillary Rodham!

  • Yes, it is Bob Dylan on backup vocals.

  • A great one alright. THank you for uploading!

  • Is that Bob Dylan on backup vocals?

  • Steve Goodman was an amazing songwriter. I miss him. The current apathetic society could use more than a few writers like him now.
