An Open Letter to the Silent Majority

This is for you as you gulp down your coffee, running late for work. This is for you as you push your cart around the frozen food section on your lunch break, dinner list in hand. This is for you with a calendar chock full of plans and kids to tuck in at night. This is for you who, maybe like me, have been wavering in the dark: where just eating a pizza and watching re-runs is simpler and safer than worrying about the government, the company-men or the biosphere.

I don't need to tell you that the world has problems. I don't need to rattle off statistics of monstrous income disparity, or explain to you that an alarming number of indigenous communities in Canada have for decades lacked access to clean water. I don't need to point out that something is seriously awry when, as a species, we accept the mass starvation of children the world over. I do not need to tell you that this planet is suspended in a gross measure of imbalance, because you already know.

Maybe you are one of the lucky ones. Maybe you have worked hard your whole life to ensure that your children are taken care of, that you might retire in comfort, that you may give a little extra to those in need. Or maybe you are busting your ass to make ends meet and you don't see how at the end of the day, when your back hurts and blisters are mounting on your feet, anyone can expect you to try and change the world.

And maybe, when you see a crowd of demonstrators marching up the street toward you, with their bongo drums, whistles and signs of every slogan, you can't fathom why they bother. And when they shout at you en masse to join them, maybe you wonder why they think it will make a difference.

Neither they nor you are responsible for this global mess. You didn't gut anybody's pension, outsource jobs or buy 7,000 acres of the richest farmland in Ontario to be desecrated in the name of profit. Is camping out in public, dancing in the streets, writing letters to politicians or signing a bunch of petitions really going to turn this world around?

I don't know.

But what I do know, is that while Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. have long since passed through the annals of history, their dreams are rising again in the bodies of the young and old everywhere. And like all freedom fighters before them, they too are being mocked today. And like you, they don't know if their actions will result in victory, but still they rise. They are standing, sitting and sleeping conviction.

Conviction that a better world is possible.

Conviction that the crisis we face is not one of scarcity but rather of inequality.

Conviction that it is our responsibility as inhabitants of this planet, to leave it a better place than we found it.

Some will say this movement is too big to fail; some will say it's too loose to win. I say it's too important not to try.

Because one day it will all be over and in that moment when you return to the earth, tomorrow's children will be born and they will know that you stood up. They will know that you refused to allow the caravan of rulers who lead the greed machine steal your power. They will know that despite all odds and the ridicule that spews forth from the mainstream media, you still dared to imagine a better world for them.

This is a call not to arms but to dreams. A call to consider the possibilities when people like you and I step outside our comfort zones and say "No more."

  • @Srekwah If "Well I was talking about her as I thought we all were" were true then this virtual exchange of ideas would be merely gossip ...there is some evidence to gossip such as " I was talking about her " however if one reads my contributions to this exchange ...clearly the evidence points to clarification of the concepts presented in type

as well as a demonstration of how to communacate outside of name calling and gossip

    peace

  • @gaiagale Well I was talking about her as I thought we all were - one day you'll realise that most of these idealists have had their strings pulled by nothing but poseurs and hypocrites, as will she....or not. Good luck!

  • @Srekwah I've read a question that seems to be one of rhetoric and/or allegation ...surely you realize I can answer for myself alone ...if I were to think I could answer for "some people" I would be answering out of turn

that aside I'm curious if you"can see she is sincere" then why type the rest of your reply as if the rest of your reply has anything to do with me

as to your allegation of an "age of 'ME'" I wish your allegation was true however this age is more an "age of YOU and THEY'

  • @gaiagale Why do some people want everyone to be the same without acknowledging the concequeces of cultural difference and personal life choice? I can see she is sincere but the lack of depth to her sloganeering makes me wonder whether, like the occupy mobs, in her search for personal meaning in this age of 'ME' she was co-opted into being a useful idiot for the usual suspects?

  • @Srekwah certainly you are etitled to your opinion ...by replying as I did I thought I was offering an opportunity to relook at your comment ...that you chose to reply to me as you did shows you are into a very different way of looking at the world than I am ...I'll share an observation of your reply ...two of the tree words that you chose to use are or contain the word 'no'

jfyi (just for your information) I have challenged myself to affirm life ...to affirm all that enters into my life ;-])

  • @gaiagale No, it's not.

  • @KCHHows Indeed! .."people of the Earth are" waking up to the fact that we are all living here on this big ol' rock ...together... hurtling through space ;-])

  • @Srekwah what on earth are you talking about?!? ...the Lady is spot on moreover compelling as well as inspiring

  • Brilliant! ...thank-you for sharing your insight ...I found your video when I was searching for an alleged "Canadian Silent Majority" after reading a rather lengthy commentary to the JRP that claimed to be speaking for the alleged "Canadian Silent Majority" I thought I'd investigate ...so far Wikipedia has zero info ...Youtube has three videos (yours is one) ...Google has a number of sites (among which I've yet to find support for the proposed pipeline across BC and Alberta)

    I'm done

    respect

  • God bless you Mowmet...good speech...xo
