Ronnie Christopher began training at the age of 14 and
his obvious talent and dedication were quickly noticed
by the KUGB senior instructors. His ability to remain
calm under pressure, which completely belied his
devastating attacks and counter attacks; became a
hallmark of this tough and determined fighter.
A many times national and international champion,
Ronnie's reputation at the time of his retirement stood
alongside the other KUGB greats. Always smiling and
polite, Ronnie Christopher represents another fine
example of the Karate Union of Great Britains philosophy
based upon the teachings of Master Funakoshi.
Although the martial arts are still popular, karate has now
become a much more sport oriented pursuit. The dynamic
and sometimes brutal fighting techniques you will see in
this video, have vanished for ever, curbed by the demands
of safety. Although clearly the constraints placed on karate
were inevitable, they have neutered this once thrilling
and dynamic art to a fast action sport. So, take a ride
down memory lane and enjoy Shotokan karate as it used
to be.
Ronnie Christopher, was my first Sensei, and i used to be On Frank Brennans kata squad , believe me this is not sport karate , the multi point scoring thinned down stuff is what we have on eurosport [and foxtel here in oz.] This is BUDO karate in its true sense , if you were hit by one of these fantastic karateka from an era that we may never see repeated again , then believe me you would stay hit.
To my former Sensei-- OSSU.

Holy cow Billtysue2 I knew Ronnie in fact we were good friends, We trained together
I would have loved you to have gone up against him, but knowing Ronnie as I did he would have pinched your nose and told you not to be such a bad boy/girl, with a grin on his face, Man/girl you don't know what you are talking about, the one thing taught by all Sanseis is respect go and get some.

@billysue2 - well with a name like 'billysue' I think you should be looking at the gay stuff, and leave this kind of thing to the men.

@billysue2. Anyone who thinks what Terry oO'neil or Frank Brennan does is sport karate is talking out of their arse. I used to train at the Liverpool Red Triangle in the 1970s where Frank Brennan is still an instructor and Terry O'Neil used to train before he started his own club. I have sparred Frank Brennan and he is awesome. Terry O'Neil's exploits are legendary. He used to work on the doors in Liverpool and put many people in hospital using his "Sport Karate". Strange sort of sport that.

@billysue2 Ronnie Christopher, Frank Brennan, Elwyn Hall, Yahara, Terry O'Neill all would love for someone to jump out on them thinking that their technique was "sport karate"!!!! Just because they have control does not mean that they can't hurt someone if they chose to. I, for one fight and spar the same way and I have no doubt that I could break a jaw bone with my kizami zuki or reverse punch aswell as destroy a spleen with my straight back kick. These men are my idols for a reason.

I guess you consider these karate guys to be all sport...! What an uneducated clown you must be - see Terry O'Neill - Elwyn Hall - Frank Brennan.... you're just another armchair hero who can't even spell technique.
