  • @Nek0TheCat I sent you a private message here on youtube, I went with Kubuntu and have been having some moderate success with it. But I seem to be making things worse... I some how removed the part of the panel at the bottom of the screen that shows what programs are running and cant get it back. I also removed the part that shows the 2 different desktops that allows me to switch from one to the other, and I cant get that back either.... Any ideas...????

  • @Nek0TheCat Yeah alot of the issues I had were issues I probably could have figured out over time, I just didnt want to bother now. Like, no driver support for my wireless adapter, in fact they all had something to do with driver support. I may try it on my land line system which is more suited for that sort of thing anyway. a much beefier system that I spend more time one to begin with. I will let you know when I start playing with Linux again.

  • @seventhson73 yeah thats some kind of problem, most forums are this cocky. thats why many users stick to ubuntu, since their forums are quite good for beginners. but lets get it to the point: you know nobody who can help you, you're damn'd, except you have a really hard will. :7

  • @Nek0TheCat lets just say, I gave up on it... maybe it is just me and I am stuck in a windows frame of mind, but I just cant get my head around linux... and I am a tech guy, I even played with linux mandrake in the day. but honestly the installmethods dont make sense, the layout doesnt make sense, If I ask for help from the linux community they tell me to search the endless forums looking for a solution to my problem. I havent put it out of my mind completely but for now it isnt for me...

  • @seventhson73 so, you conversation with @lewiar is a month ago. may i ask you how it went, giving linux a shot?

    Its just my curiosity.

  • @lewiar Yeah read it was a good jump point from windows to get my feet wet with Linux. I heard also that the Gnome 3 had lots of issues at this point so I should stay away from them as I am just starting out with Linux.

  • @seventhson73 Mint 11 is nice enough, be aware that it is very much the "last hurrah" for the old style gnome 2 UI, so it's probably a good choice given that the the Gnome 3 UI (Unity or Gnome Shell) is still a little in flux. There is one piece of advice tho, make SURE you're running the 1.3 version of the Wine tree (that's the beta one I know, but at this point, since Windows is a moving target, it's probably the better choice... I have never seen a serious problem with it. ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

  • @lewiar Thanks for the replies... I understand what you are talking about. but again what can Linux do for an average guy like me...? I am going to give a Linux OS a try this weekend, I have chiose to start with Linux Mint 11... With Wine allowing me to run windows programs I think it is time to try Linux again...

  • Respond to this video... ....... more than that, I've seen an entire windows environment of hundreds of servers owned in the time it took to patch it, PXE booted, installed, patched immediately, every box was owned before it finished patching, that is your "secure" system.... You are right, everything has it's issues, Linux software is less common, but it does exist.... enough that I run only a few games with Wine, everything else I need is native... it really isn't a problem.

  • @seventhson73 ....... I also work in IT security, and I actually get to see the what the vulnerabilities that are being patched are... in one exercise I reduced a list of 15,000 "vulnerabilities" down to around 20 that actually needed to be patched in the short term, yet every time I see a list of Windows patches I want to cry because virtually every one of them is a remote, anonymous code execution flaw that will own your machine. Run AV, sacrifice performance, but you're not protected really.
