Edited and colorized for television by G. Brotmeyer.

In 1988 MTV aired this sanitized version of Luis Bunuel's Surrealist classic during it's alternative music show "120 Minutes".

You read that correctly. MTV aired it. I know, hard to believe.
Just to save some people time. The eyeball slice scene is missing so don't waste your time scrolling ahead.

  • There are some things MTV shouldn't mess with...

  • The colorized version isn't as bad as people are commenting. It adds a new experimental touch to the already experimental flick.

  • they cut out the part where the eyeball is sliced.

  • interesting, but I prefer black and white.

  • @michaelforthriller The whole film was deliberately made to make no sense at all. But i wish someone would make a modern remake.

  • @SREproducciones the problem is not the color. the problem is that it was cut form 16 minutes to 1

  • Me gusta .... buen experimento

  • I remember seeing this on MTV Europe around about 1993 / 94. My little sister was terrified by it, she'd run out of the room whenever she heard the music at the start- she couldn't even listen to me hum it! Of course, now she loves the original, un-colourised version.

Also I've been doing a bit of browsing trying to find out exactly who G Brotmeyer was and have found a claim in an archived letter on Jonathan Rosenbaum's website that this version is in fact a satire aimed at Ted Turner.

  • I'd like to see a full version in color.

  • What happened to THIS Mtv? Always divulgating real art to young generations....now its just reality tv and stereotypes...
