Sept. 4,1972 Canada vs. Russia Game 2 of 8 in Toronto @ 1:19 in the 3rd period Yvonne Cournoyer uses his sniper ability to nail the 5 hole from the bottom of the circle. Canada goes on to win the game 4-1 to tie the series 1-1.
Cournoyer was the unsung hero of this series. He scored that goal, and stole the puck to feed Henderson to wn the game...not much was said about that...but then again, he was a French Canadian...Yvon was a star of stars in hockey...I'll never forget.
arrogant canadians, the russians made you sweat, and now, thankfully, hockey is not just dumb canadians... lots of europeans, thank you 1972!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Canadian are very proud of their country.i know i am ..... one thing we have is the game of hockey . THATS OURS . and i'll always try to remember that. i hope you will too.
All that mattered that day is that a CANADIAN scored.I was there in 72.There were no Leafs or Habs or Bruins. This was our struggle. We were over confident going in.We prevailed only because we could not accept failure,so we got rough. We never out finessed the russians,we intimidated them, better than they did.We played like we were possessed. If we had taken them more serriously at the start we would have saved ourselves alot of trouble. The greatest sporting contest of all time.We are CANADIAN.
Actually a leaf scored a game winning goal in game 6, 7 and 8 of the series. His name was Paul Henderson. He was traded to the leafs in 68. The only other game winner for the Canadians was scored by Yvan Cournoyer (the roadrunner) a Montreal Canadien.
