A chemistry project in which we had to produce 50mL oxygen gas.

  • whats the name of the flask you used that has a tube in it?

  • It's called a buchner flask.

  • And how did you tell its exactly 50mililiters? Unless you did some mole calculations its quite hard to tell because its mixed with steam. And even if you did so the use-aspect of this method is quite miserable as the oxygen is mixed as I said before and scattered in the whole reacting set. (sorry for my english, I have really no clue on chemistry terminology :P )

  • We did do calculations using chemistry rules so we knew we would definitely make more than 50mL. As far as the oxygen being mixed, the steam does condense to liquid water leaving pure oxygen as the only gas (if all goes correctly). I know there were a few flaws and I don't want to try and explain them as I'm not an expert, but, long story short, we produced more than 50mL oxygen.

  • more dilute H2O2 / KMnO4 solution -> less violent reaction -> more and easyer to trap the gas -> no backlash

btw. its everything but pure oxygen - or didnt u saw all the N2 in the beginning + sucked in air from the "funnel" during the backlash

keeping the funnel sealed tight at the top would increase the efficiency, however (without a pressure compensation) it would take longer for larg volumes (>100ml)

  • Collect the O2 in a test tube, then put a burning ember in it and see what happens. It's cool- and not dangerous.

  • @Slashpoint001 You can potentially make an explosive mixture with those chemicals. PPE might look a bit daft but it is preferable to severe facial burns or missing eyes.

  • @newforestroadwarrior Granted but they are still kids that are into chemistry and thats all that matters for now

  • just use hdrogen proxide and menansees dioxide

  • @Slashpoint001 The PPE is still inadequate for what they are doing.

  • I'm impressed, you are wearing a lab coat and you actually know what you are doing, their are so many science video on YouTube that lack this, great job!

  • Oooh wow you made some oxygen -_-

    ...thumbs down...

  • THIS IS SO FUNNY PERFORMING EXPERIMENTS OF EIGHTH CLASS

  • just want to say, as a med student in the states: For the age you guys are, guessing 15-16, and being able to use equipment like that, as well as looking at the sophistication of your lab, is outstanding. Usually here, we have that in maybe first or second year of undergraduate. brilliant guys, keep it up!
