does it need a power cable or is it battery operated?

Top effort mate, beaut project.

Menkesdriek, do you simply have a grid of LEDs sitting directly under a layer of plywood, or is there also a mask under the wood? (The latter seems to be the case because each circle of light is so well-defined).

Also, could this work as well with standard-size (5mm) LEDs? Thanks.

Good scientists also specify the complete basis for their conclusions. Is your estimate of 552MJ/year based on all 175 LEDs being on continuously for that full year?

If so, depending on how the table is actually used and designed (like whether it has a simple on/off switch), you could be off by several orders of magnitude.

I could do the math myself, but a), I'm not a scientist, and b), I'm a lazy bastard.

LOL don't worry, scientists can be lazy as well! I did also post more about the basis of my calculations but those, and a number of other posts here have been deleted, so what I say below seems a bit out of context now (as I was replying to some ignorant acrimonious individual who made obloquious assertions without any depth of thought). One post made was that in 1 year the table would would use less power than 1 washing machine cycle...

(BTW the 30MJ is based on ave number of LEDS on, - not all on). I also pointed out (which got deleted?) that this was an over-simplification - there is also power consumed by the control electronics - if it was dedicated programmable logic chips, power would be of the order of the same order, and if it was controlled by a computer and some interface, then you're looking at around 40W minimum (disregarding VDU, since once its set-up you're hardly likely to need screen on).

For the record, I do like the table, it has good potential for conveying information in public places. Using figures given to me by menkesdriek, the total LED power consumption is 19W, which is equivalent to an energy saving lightbulb. In real life, not all LEDS are on continuously, energy in one year more like 30MJ (6 washing machine cycles) - still not bad.

You are not a scientist. Real Scientists do not bully and use insults. As Lord Kelvin said "When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge of it is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind". Dogmatic opinion pushing is not science.
