A 3 hr time-lapse video of a mixed primary cortical culture, showing the complex interactions of different cell types. Microglia and neurons are visible over a bed of astrocytes; after live-imaging the cells are fixed, labeled and imaged again to see which cells were of which type.
To study brain injury in this model system, cultures are given an inflammation-related compound (such as TNF-alpha) to induce injury responses in the cells.
Using this injury model the effects of novel anti-inflammatory compounds can be studied by measuring their effects over time on each of the cell types present.
