i didn't get a word he said in french. that's because i'm Latvian and we know only 3.5 languages.

My Italian is sketchy- 3 classes in college and 2 I dropped, tried to translate a letter from my great grandmother to her sister in Italian, and my mother's baby picture was in an Italian newspaper, and of course Italian songs like Dimenticha which are most songs are in Venetian anyway.

I know muchas gracias and my Spanish is very good. I took Spanish since the 6th grade, lived in Miami that is mostly Spanish speaking. I googled and yes the latin for thanks is Gratias. My mother's ex spoke Spanish since I was a kid. I always think Molte Grazie for some reason instead of mille. I never realize hate in French is deteste. Americans never say I deteste or abhor you, that sounds more of an English uppity thing.

this is just me spitballing but this show was in 1998, maybe stand up hadn't picked up in france at that time. if it had, it would probably just have been a joke

the common expressions are

(mille) grazie (italian)

(muchas) gracias (spanish)

grazie and gracias obviously descending from the same roots

and muito obrigado (portuguese) being alike "much obliged" in english

and i would think mille is latin (and yes it means 1000) especially seeing

french - mille

spanish - mil

portuguese - mil

romanian - mie
