Amtrak Train 285, the long distance Empire Service Regional Train to Niagara Falls, is seen here departing from Track 35 in Grand Central Terminal. Today's consist is Metro North Genesis P32ACDM's 230 and 208 and Amtrak Genesis 713 with 5 Amfleet I's and New York Central Observation Car Hickory Creek bringing up the markers. If only it were the 50's and Hickory Creek could be attached to something substantial, such as the 20th Century Limited, as it was used for back then. Oh to have lived in the 50's. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on October 26th, 2008.

  • I thought Amtrak did not use Grand Central.

  • Was Hickorey Creek operated as part of the train?

That would be awesome to travel in!

  • The train ran untill 1967, when the Post Office taking directions from the powerful highway lobby removed the mail from the trains and put it on their trucks. The NYC quickly dropped the train. So why did it run out of GCT I thought Amtrak couldn't afford to run out of there anymore. Most have been a special move. Also I see the Phoebe Snow Obs cars in the distance. They were just as nice as the NYC cars with no extra fare which the NYC charged.

  • Interesting that the last car even survives today, because I bet it was used to trail trains out of Grand Central even back in 1948.
