Record Setting Foal from the 2007 Pony Penning Auction

Record setting colt from the 2007 Pony Penning Auction. The palomino pinto colt sold for $17,500 breaking the 2001 record of $10,500. The colt is a buyback meaning that he will be turned back out on Assateague to live out his life. He was named Tornado's Prince of Tides by his owners. Prince is sired by Tornado and is out of My Little Secret.

They were fomr pending.They come in and catch a bunch on wild ponies then put them in auction pens for people to take them home.This only happens once a year.Left over ponies are realeased back into the wild without any harm.

All of the foals are auctioned, older ponies only very rarely. The foals turned back are not "left over" after the auction but were selected to be released back to Assateague, such as this foal was.

Not sure why this horse sold for so much. He is scared, looks unhandled and has to be tackled by 3 men. Can you explain some more details about the horse and what is so special?

The foal is feral. Google Chincoteague Pony Penning and/or the children's book Misty of Chincoteague. He will remain feral for the rest of his life, and "buying" these foals has become very popular and pricey. A group of ladies wanted this colt and got into a bidding war, hence his price.

I think this is what's so awesome about the program. And in the end, she probably paid as much for that colt as she would have if she'd bought it and kept it all its life.

Correct. All of the ponies are owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department. The funds are used by the fire department for their needs and to care for the ponies.

Misty of Chincoteague is a favorite of mine. So where do the proceed's of the sale go? Is it a fund raiser to help the ponies? Thank you for explaining for me.
