Why are we doing matam? Just use your common sense. If you're a muslim and even if you're not.. When you love someone it's natural that if he is in pain and grieve you will cry and beat yourself. It's absolutely natural. In Quran shareef Allah s.w.t says: Islam is deen e fitrat (religion of nature) Take an example of Hazrat Yakoob a.s.. He cried for his son Hazrat Yousuf a.s and lost his eyesight. Hazrat Owais e qarani broke his tooth and mourned in love of the holy Prophet Muhammad pbuh.

Sometimes tradition becomes more important than religion this is one case, it's forbidden to hurt yourself or someone else in Islam...
