Joe McNally has been described as one of the the most versatile photojournalist working today. He is known within the industry for his ability to produce technically and logistically complex assignments with expert use of color and light. He began producing assignments for LIFE in 1984, and was a contract photographer at Sports Illustrated for several years. He has photographed cover stories for LIFE, TIME, Newsweek, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, and New York Magazine.

Joe is regularly honored with awards and citations. In 1986, he received a Page One Award from the Newspaper Guild of New York. The National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) has granted him numerous Pictures of the Year awards including First Place in Magazine Illustration in 1988 and First Place in Magazine Product Illustration in 1993. In 1996, the World Press Photo Foundation honored him with a Third Prize in People in the News.

His latest assignment is working for Nikon, testing and photographing the new full-frame D3, which Calumet will be shipping in November. The D3 is a new digital SLR camera that is poised to once again revolutionize photography for professionals. The 12.1 effective megapixel D3 features Nikon's new FX-format CMOS sensor, measuring 23.9 x 36mm, which is nearly identical to the size of 35mm film. With the fastest startup time, shortest viewfinder blackout time, and shortest shutter lag of any digital SLR camera as well as the capability to shoot up to nine frames per second at full FX-format resolution, the D3 is the world's fastest digital SLR camera in its class.

  • THAT'S IT! It's a wrap!

This will be the first PRO camera that will outsell any previous Nikon PRO equipment, even the F4/F5 series. I can bet you that 1/2 the D200 owners who love their camera will be going for the D3. I sure now I will.

I currently own an F5 and a D80 (I've been waiting on a FULL Frame Digital equivalent of my F5. It has finally arrived!

    -Thank You

    Nikon

  • niko is my favorite charcter in GTA IV more than Luis and johnny niko is the BEST

  • that's what happens when you become a photographer? that's it? so simple? I don't think so...

  • Really? I've found it fine so far. no problems at all with the focusing. even in low light... i'll take a closer look

  • Nikon d3 problems: First of the images I got from the camera were incredible, amazing clarity and the noise was hardly anywhere at 6400 compaired with previous digi's. So the final image was great really impressed.

BUT the focusing? I was shooting with a 70-200 2.8 vr and the new 24-70 2.8 lens' they refused to find focus in low light and were seeking for hours. I set the camera focus on one point ai so it would focus quicker and i could manually adjust.

  • I'll tell you what happens when you become a photographer, even a good one. You go through years of crappy, crappy assignments and get paid in peanuts. Then, someone offers to publish your work with your name on it for NO pay. Sweet deal huh! To say, "that's what happens when you become a photographer" is totally understating Joe's entire career. C'mon, the more you drill on Joe, the more he's going to spit out. Let him talk next time. And think of your questions BEFORE you interview!

  • Poor interview from an editorial standpoint. The guy sounded more like a fan and less like a journalist, and the cameraman shoots with Gonzo-esque jitter. "Amazing, and it's it's it's been great over the years hasn't it. It's been your love hasn't it?" "That's what happens when you become a photographer" ???? I don't think so buddy.

  • The lens is a 105/2.8 Micro Nikkor VR.

  • humm, i bought D300, hopefully next time D3 :)

  • i wish i were him too. he's holding it

  • i wish i were him.
