Max Steiner also scored "Gone with the Wind". In that score, you can very blatantly hear Steiner borrowing from Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony.
An artist wants to relate to a wide audience, and the expression of the tragic is more universal than personal. The Russian sensibility is inexorably linked to the land of their home. The reason so many however, including people who are not Russian, can relate to his music is because it is very human. He takes human experiences and raises them to dramatic levels because in the individual the pain of being alone intense. It is the ego battling mortality. It is everyone's story.
