This is yet another rouser of a welsh hymn tune sung to the words:

The Welsh Words.

Dyma gariad fel y moroedd,
Tosturiaethau fel y lli;
Twysog Bywyd pur yn marw,
Marw i brynun bywyd ni;
Pwy all beidio â chofio amdano?
Pwy all beidio â chanur glod?
Dyma gariad na ân angof
Tra bo nefoedd wen yn bod.

Ar Galfaria yr ymrwygodd
Holl ffynhonnaur dyfnder mawr;
Torrodd holl argaeaur nefoedd
Oedd yn gyfan hyd yn awr;
Gras a chariad megis dilyw
Yn ymdywallt yma nghyd,
A chyfiawnder pur a heddwch
Yn cusanu euog fyd.

O ddyfnderoedd o ddoethineb!
O ddyfnderoedd maith o ras!
O ddirgelion anchwiliadwy,
Bythol uwch eu chwilio i maes!
Mae seraffiaid nef yn edrych
Gyda syndod bob yr un
Ar ddyfnderoedd cariad dwyfol
Duw yn marw dros y dyn!

The English Words Mean This:

Love abounding like the ocean
Pity unbounded like the sea,
Prince of condemned to dying
Dying so that we be free
Who can but recall the anguish?
Who can but sing out in praise?
Such a love for e'er remembered
While there is a heaven above.

On Mount Calvary the fountains
From the depths did burst in rage;
Heaven's defences tore assunder,
All intact until that day;
Grace and mercy, like a deluge,
Flowed together, like a flood,
Peace and justice in one Person
Came to kiss a sinful world.

O what depths of honoured wisdom!
O what mighty depths of grace!
O what secrets without fathom,
All beyond our human ken!
Even heaven's seraphim are
Full of awe and wonderment
At the depths of God's compassion -
God who died for thee and me.

Sing Along!

  • @usenetposts I suspect you hear it to the tune "Pennant". I last heard this more than a decade ago, at the 1997 Bala Eisteddfod. I just regret being too young to appreciate it at the time - had I known what I was in for, I'd have studied the Welsh words and practised beforehand. Dad would like me to speak Welsh fluently, mind - but I live in bloody Yorkshire!

    Anyway, superb job and it's spine-tingling to hear it belting out again after these years.

  • Cheers!

  • They never have their own videos. Great play, Rob. Usually I hear those words to a different melody. I know this melody to different words too. "O the deep deep love of Jesus". That's in Evangelical Hymns, but there are alternatives in there too.

  • Cheers!

  • oh yes - 5 stars from me Rob mate!

  • Well put Rob - I mean where do these idiots think of these stupid names - "Trunkstrunks" ha ha
