The majority of courses in the BA in History at Richmond mainly covers the modern period 18th 21st centuries, but it is important to get a good foundation. In the first year general survey courses cover everything from origins of humankind right through to the early modern period. In the 2nd and 3rd years students specialise into themes areas such as history of China, Japan, Usa. This can be done frantically for example by looking at propaganda, fascism, empire, the enlightenment or by regional means such as Eastern Europe or Europe. Students learn to be critical and look at sources and other opinions. It is a rational progress from year 1 to year 4 with the highlight being the senior essay, an extensive dissertation applied to a topic of interest. London has resources and archives second to none, including The National Academy, National Portrait Gallery, British Museum and the Maritime Museum. London is the best place in the world to study history. Further to this, the Liberal Arts tradition at Richmond provides a more rounded education and students can learn other topics from other Richmond Programs.
