No, I am sure that the first version I heard was the Searchers. And it was written by Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche. Later he had his wife Cher record a version of this which I have on my Cher solo album. There
is also a version of Cher doing it on youtube.

Imagine being a 13 year old boy and seeing her perform this while standing just in front of the stage... She was really powerful as a performer back then and the most memorable act that night.
