Of course, I'm not slagging of the Paul, but I've decided (in my humble opinion), that Les Pauls need to be played with a bit more aggression, more powerchords etc, and leave the blues-y soloing to hollowbodies. But that might be just because I'm more into bands like Green Day etc. But brilliant playing nonetheless :D

I've always been a strat guy, but if I could have another guitar itd probably be a 57 les paul. only thing stopping me is the mindbloggling amount of zeros on the end of the price tag for one of these beauties

wow that guitar looks huge on you

I love the sound of 60+year-old mahogany. The old Les Pauls have a fuller sound, bigger bottom, and more dynamics, and the old wood is the key. That's the key difference between the originals and the reissues. But, I've found (with new ones) that honduras mahogany sounds closer to the old stuff they used in the'50s/'60's than African mahogany (Gibson used Honduras mahogany on their Les Pauls until (I think) 1974). I have a Dean Evo made from Hond. mahog., and it sounds fuller than the new LP's.

At first I thought it looked too-nice to be a real '57, but the tone sounded way-too-good to be modern-Gibson (Not without a p/u-swap - I knew they weren't new Gibsons). I wish I'd truly-appreciated those original 50's Les Pauls back in the 80's. A friend from high school (mid '80's) had a '57 gold-top (Paid $400), and I remember how nice it played, and how the finish would crack in the winter, but mostly I remember the tone from those original PAF's, and I've been chasing that tone ever since.

To some I suppose it is. Generally, I think most people consider the '59 as the "Holy Grail" of Pauls. '57 was the first year for the humbucker though, and that's pretty cool.
