I had to retrain my very nervous, untrusting, proudcut Thoroughbred to be calm, confident, trusting. To help him (and I), I retrained him to ride calmly on a loose lead. I believe that the reins are for a few things: 1.) to serve as a crutch if the leg aids do not work, and 2.) to assist in more advanced movements (i.e. high level dressage). We're still in the process of training... :-)
