After countless tries, I finally beat PoFV's Extra with Komachi!

The slowdown on stages 7-9 are due to Fraps; I played the game at full speed.

How do you unlock extra mode? I always play the game but it never lets me go in there. And how do you play as Komachi? Is that only in extra mode too?

To unlock Extra Mode, beat Story Mode with every character except Komachi and Sikieiki. Komachi is initially only playable in Extra Mode; beat Extra Mode with her to unlock Sikieiki in Extra Mode. Beat Extra Mode with Sikieiki to unlock the other 12 characters for Extra Mode as well as Komachi and Sikieiki for Story Mode.

I got this game along with 6, 7 and 8, could you give me any tips? This one seems quite a bit different than the others.

Anyway, How can you do this? It's way too quick! to say amazing job would be an understatement!

My main advice would be to play as defensively as you can in both Story Mode and Extra Mode. In Story Mode, the CPU is programmed to get progressively weaker over time, so just focus on dodging bullets and be patient, the CPU will die sooner or later.

As for how I do this, it's mostly practice and a zillion failed attempts. Also, Extra Mode has slightly tweaked rules to make it fast and frantic.

As for advice for the rest of the Touhou series, notice that in 7 and later, a white dot appears on your character when Focused (hold Shift). That's your hitbox; a bullet can pass through anywhere else on your character with no ill effects. Most games also have a homing shot type, start with those and focus on just dodging bullets.

Also, I recommend starting with 7 or 8. 8 has probably the easiest Easy Mode in the series, while 7 is more similar to the other games, and it has more awesome music

I only got to stage 9 once using Fairy spells when I need to.

Now,the CPU got the advantage and now I could only get to stage 1(stupid icicles keep killing me and little small bullets.) 3(damnit,assasination knives.) 4(Y U NO DIE WHEN HIT,YOUMU?!) 5( Explosions. Explosions everywhere.)

A year on from when I asked you for help, I've cleared 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12's Extra Stages, and have 1CCd 6, 8 and 10 on Hard. :D

Funnily enough, STILL haven't unlocked Extra on 9 yet xD

I bought it when i was in Japan this summer (2010).

It cost me 1250 Yen (11 dollars) and touhou 9.5 for 1050 Yen (9 dollars), i still play easy mode and sometimes normal mode... ^^"
