This is the only win of Celeste in the 1966 World cup in England. Uruguay qualified from the group stage thanks to two goaless draws, against England and Mexico respectively. In quarterfinals, they lost heavily against Germany, mainly because of scandalous refereeing.

This was the only game of the tournament, played at White City staduim in London, as all the other five matches of this group took place at Wembley. This very day Wembley curiously hosted dog racing, which was considered as more important thing than the football world cup itself!

  • I hope Celeste will...

    1930 - 1950 - 1980 - 2010 - 2030! ;-)

The Faroes will unfortunately never make it to the finals... Uruguay is probably a small country but still 65 times bigger than the Faroes!

  • they say when you first retire it's your first death

  • @gamelover1827mw2 I am sorry to learn that. I know retirement can be very hard for successful pros. It must be very difficult to pass from a life of failure and success, and under constant pressure, to a regular life of a retired youngster. Psicologycal assistance is normal nowadays, but it surely wasn´t back then.

  • @Moncho1234 and to make it worse he also smokes

  • @Moncho1234 ya its sad now when pro soccer players quit well some like my grandfather turn to alcohol

  • @gamelover1827mw2 Very easy. I looked for him in the internet. Nacional, Boca Juniors, Peñarol, Olimpiakos, AEK Athens. Great performance in greece! Back in ´66 he was only 20.
