record mono file on trck 1..pan left
copy mono fileof trck 1 to trck 2..pan right
nudge trck 2 forward 10-20ms...
......bounce......
result is a stereo track..

@onlinejamsessions youre right - its a perfectly good WORK AROUND that will SATISFY most people, but it's NOT turning mono into stereo, as the title suggests.
this method is an overused hack and any professional can tell the difference. it sounds great when used accordingly, it sounds horrible when used as a SUBSTITUTION for a REAL stereo image.
and if I couldn't hear the difference i wouldn't care. the difference is clear. sound engineering/production is my profession, not my hobby.

it would be cool to panel mono to stereo left and richt will still keeping the original mono sound in the middle, also adding delay to it would be really cool to give an effect of real stereo and even surround.
i wish i had such equipmentment to hookup all my retro game consoles to it to deliver stereo effect.

hmmm interesting, I'll try it out, thank you!

@jditmer0 right - I'm advocating AGAINST the ms delay. I don't know of any good IRF or early ref workarounds. May be a plugin that does this well. I've heard of using EQ in odd ways...Track A is panned left and has EQ setting X, but is bused to the RIGHT side of a stereo verb. Track B is panned right and has EQ setting Y, and is bused to the LEFT side of the stereo verb. Again, creating a sense of depth in a less destructive way, if done tastefully...

@J4wsome Yes your talking about Pseudo Stereo. But adding small delays between 1-3 ms on these duplicated panned out tracks will still cause mono-compatibility issues once converted to mono. This is because the tracks will overlap with a bad sound in the center due to the slight delays
any other methods you might know of? any tricks with early reflections or impulse responses? (i know nothing about early reflections or impulse responses)

@jditmer0 also a good tip is once you pan both the original and duplicate, bus them BOTH to a stereo verb, or delay. THIS will add some further depth.

@jditmer0 the best way to achieve what I think you are talking about is to duplicate the mono sound, pan each one to wherever you'd like it (obviously one will be so much L the other will me so much R) and that's it. It's now stereo. Since they are duplicates, it doesn't sound 'wide' so people do things like add delay to one of the tracks (like in this vid) to try to mimic it...but it doesnt sound wide to me...it sounds like one track is delayed....basically like a delay plugin.

Your right. The main issue with this is that it's not a mono compatible method. If you separate this into the mid-side stereo field and mute all information on the sides, you will notice that the center of the mix sounds awful. The best mono tracks are in fact the best stereo, thus this method is bad
J4wsome, do you know of a mono compatible method that will turn a mono source into stereo? I work with synths and do not acoustically record, so I would need a method that fakes stereo!
-
should've set up 2 mics at least on an acoustic anyway, lol, but yeah, not everyone can. so yup, anything to give the illusion of stereo from a mono source: chorus, stereo delay, enhancers, double and pan with 10ms delay, etc...

@recordbetteraudio i am also having MR816CSX in my studio, are you happy with MR816CSX---?
-
Well - Ok - ONLY part one - is actually HERE at present.. because audio whatsit - doesn't AUTO approve response videos.. PART 2 - the stereo version... is still deeply buried somewhere- in amongst all my other re-mastering works.
(on my own ch - but don't go there - as U'll never want to come back here)
which audio interface you are using in this recording
