During the autumn 2008 migration a flock of twelve Black Storks roosted in Malta. Apart from being rare migrants this flock is the second largest ever recorded in the Maltese islands. Shamefully, of the twelve birds 3 were observed shot down, 4 were seen safely leaving the islands, another 2 were reported shot down and the fate of the other 3 is unknown.
The Maltese police force is very under-resourced however I don't think it is fair to say that they are turning a blind eye to illegal hunting. There are officers amongst the ALE who have earned respect for the great work they have done under very difficult conditions. More resources are needed to counter the level of illegal activity though.
