I just saw the first episode of the 4th season of Have Gun Will Travel and was dumbfounded because the guest star's voice was so recognizable and I couldn't place who the actor was until the credits, in which the guest star was Martin Gabel. It was the first time
You make a VERY good point! It seemed he played nothing but bad guys & nogoodniks during the later phase of his career. And yes, he was wasted in a lot of roles. Too bad he was often underated & underused by the industry. A very talented thespian....he's still sorely missed. THANKS for your insightful comment! :)
to ahoymicheal:what do you mean by S&M show? will you explain please? hope you haven't been trying to be sarcastic--the character wore black because it wouldn't reflect dirt in the surroundings--ie.--sleeping on the ground--as white or any light color would have.
He made a presumably later appearance in his "Have Gun-Will Travel" cowboy suit. Watching HGWT today, it's perfectly obvious that it's an S&M show. Here he briefly discusses his anthology series, a genre that's oddly now lost in the mists of time..
Hated the fact that in his later years, all I saw was him playing a villian when he was in a western. A lot of his spots just wasted his great talent.
Great fun! Thank you for including the good night bit! Always fun when Martin is next to Arlene on the panel and Bennett teases John about something funny!
1963 -- Martin Gabel could have used another hit in this period. He starred in Irwin Shaw's play "Children at their Games" -- the flop heard round the world. Played less than a week, I hear.
The panel arrangement here suggests that the producers were grooming Phyllis Newman to replace Dorothy Kilgallen if she couldn't return to work from her hospitalization for substance abuse.
RE: Richard Boone Show. RB hosted the series and starred in half of the episodes, garnering an Emmy nomination. His repertory company of 15 actors included Guy Stockwell, Robert Blake, Bethel Leslie (nominated for an Emmy), Warren Stevens, Harry Morgan. They rotated parts; each appeared in most episodes, and each starred in at least one. Writers included Robert Dozier, Rod Serling, and Clifford Odets. Buck Houghton (Twilight Zone) produced
for Goodson-Todman. "Petticoat Junction" defeated it.

Well I have a lot of lovely things I'd love to say to Arlene! And about her. For one thing, she picked a great husband.
