One last video clip from a long week-end filming trains at Cajon Pass (and area): I couldn't leave without filming these two - very clean - AT&SF SD40-2 helpers going back to Barstow or Victorville (dunno). I was behind the SP track.

  • all helpers in that area go to Victorville. when was this taken? lately Dash 9s have been doing the pushing

  • Yes, they were going up North to Victorville. It was shot on Aug 2, 1997 (my birthday, actually!)

  • Nice catch! A snoot SD40-2 and a SD45-2!

  • Indeed, thanks, it was totally unexpected. I was chasing the "tail" of a Southbound SP train from the side service road (!) ... and I saw that pair in the far distance. Well, the problem is that I was holding the camcorder in one hand and my SLR on the other hand. So, at some moment the shooting is not that steady. I understand that today these machines are long gone. Too bad I didn't shoot more videos at that time.

  • the second engine is a cabbed slug

  • sweet video,,,, why does the lead locomotive have a long hood????

  • its for extra communications equipment like for helper service. PS- the second loco is an SD45-2, basically a SD45 that looks like a long SD40-s.

  • idk, theyre called snoot noses, thats all i know

  • Great clip, thanks for sharing.
