Following a recent Rospa test I invited the rider out for a couple of hours to look at a cupole of issues raised on test. In this video it was overtaking.
Before we go any further, remember the majority have motorcycles that will allow us to overtake mostly anything, at anytime we want, so long it is SAFE and Legal. It just needs a little planning and those all important two words: FORWARD PLANNING.
The first overtake could have been planned better as all solid white lines should the 2 Toe in Arrows.
Second overtake - I went out to get a better view, no gaps, but almost immediately the first car moved over and slowed, hence the gap opened up. On the approach to the roundabout, good view passed the island, so why not plan a possible overtake...... Everything seemed to work pout alright.

  • I'll have to setup the camera on the bike the next time I head down to Basingstoke from Newbury, very similar to the traffic conditions and overtaking opportunities demonstrated in your video.

  • @Crisisbiker Look forward to the footage

  • The sequence after 1:30 is great in my humble opinion. It shows how to accelerate past a vehicle in a queue of traffic and smoothly return to your side of the road into a pre-planned gap.

  • @Crisisbiker - Thanks for the feedback. With overtaking, always be sure there is a gap to go into before you consider an overtake. Do not FORCE the gap. With most motorcycles, you have the power so can pick your overtaking when ever youy want. DO NOT RUSH ! If in any doubt, HOLDBACK

  • @advancedbiker Also part of the problem relates to "acceleration sense". I have seen bikers nail the throttle to get past a car and then yank on the brakes to squeeze into the gap. Quite often I find myself actually rolling off the throttle as I pass the vehicle I am overtaking so as to smoothly return to my lane between vehicles.

  • @Crisisbiker - Good point re use of the throttle, another tip I was given was start the overtake when then approaching vehicle is along side of you. By the time the motorcycle responds that vehicle has gone....

  • @raftnn = Thanks Roger....I try and tell my clients that any vehicles to be overtaken, IF SAFE TO DO SO are moving hazards. So apply the 'system' accordingly. The next thing is judging speed and distance which comes with practice..

  • Excellent Nigel, Been reaaly working on my over taking techniques and this just renforces what I have been doing. Roger Fleming

  • Many thanks that will be hugely useful for me and my trainees.

  • @lucasb899 Many thanks, glad it helps. There is also a Blog page using the footage and still iamages, if that is of any use to you. Let me know if it works; look for advancedbikerblog. Will send you the link.
