Laos recently hosted the Southeast Asian Games for the first time ever, a move that gained it prestige and perhaps just as importantly an economic boost. As VOA's Daniel Schearf reports from the capital Vientiane, the landlocked farming nation depends on exporting natural resources but it increasingly expects tourism to play a larger economic role.

  • I agree. Instead of doing everything all at once, the country should focus on some basic fundamentals. My suggestions:

    1) Increase education opportunities to all citizens, thus, this will lead to an educated, productive, and quality workforce (i.e., more engineers, entrepreneurs, scientists, and doctors).

    2) Since other countries are producing plenty of goods, Laos should focus on the service industry (i.e., tourist, educations, energy, sports, technology, real estates, etc.).

  • I think, a better and more efficient public transportation throughout the country would be a plus for tourists and citizens alike. I also think, market-place and food-stalls could use a little face-lift for better image of Laos to tourists and the world. In my opinion, these should be among the top priorities to the government - and need to be done asap. Laos is a very beautiful country with a lot of potentials to be the best among Asian countries, or perhaps even the world.
