The disease is similar to cancer in some ways and historically has been treated by Oncologists with radiation and chemotherapy. Unlike cancer, it sometimes goes into remission without treatment. Histiocytosis is so rare there is little research into its cause and treatment. Unfortunately, the pain and suffering associated with this disease are just as severe as that with diseases that are well known and receive major research funding, My best friend passed of this :(

Although the cause and best treatment of this disease are unknown, scientists do know that patients with Histiocytosis have too many histiocytes, a form of white blood cell, growing in their bodies. These cells wildly multiply and can attack any part of the body, including bones, spleen, liver, lungs, skin and lymph nodes.
