My friend, pianist James Williams(RIP) & ICU "Self Esteem" (Second Story Music, NYC) and my favorite group, STEEL PULSE Back To Our Roots Tour 2010 [HQ]
by Anna Fisher (videos)
STEEL PULSE has been one of my greatest influences in music, couldn't believe there was a band on earth this great and I hadn't ever heard them. They had quite a few albums out already and know I'd have loved them as much as Bob Marley had they been given more airplay.
Moved to St. John, United States Virgin Islands in 1983 after six visits to see my mom who was teaching there. We performed many concerts for the community and I was soon hired to teach Elementary Music on this tiny island of 4500 year-round residents. The local school children reminded me of the poor children of Africa and Jamaica that I had only read about in books. My mom's new love affair with everything Virgin Islands was soon mine as well! Remained on Love City for ten blessed years and heard STEEL PULSE daily and jammed it often in my car riding around the tiny emerald of the breathtaking turquoise Caribbean Waters.
In 1992, was driving down the road listening to STEEL PULSE'S, "ROLLERSKATE" and heard David Hinds singing, "LIFE LIFE WITHOUT MUSIC I CAN'T GO"...for the twenty thousandth time but THIS time was different...I HAD TO MEET THESE ARTISTS!!!! I wanted to do what they did, see them produce and perform, talk to them about the process of recording. Oh I longed for more music, my life was yearning for change and was waking up in a nightmare every day except one night I slept away on St. Croix alone and the couple weeks I recovered from two c sections, in ten years I had to fly.
Ten years I'd been denying the inevitable, fear was holding me back. STEEL PULSE, THIRD WORLD, BOB MARLEY, and most of all HARRIET TUBMAN, STEVIE WONDER and HELEN KELLER gave me the courage to take the giant leap. With .46 cents, my daughter 7 and son 14 months I did what was necessary to protect us from further harm...
Five months later, the second month into having our own apartment, my best friend, Gayle Gosselin brought my oboe and English horns to us in Hilo, Hawaii from St. John, USVI. She also insisted I attend STEEL PULSE's SHOW at Afook Chinen Stadium nearby as a reward for the obstacles and challenges we had overcome.
The show was PHENOMENAL!!!!
Chatted for a second with one of the big guys at the stage door after it concluded and begged to meet the band. Told them I'd been teaching in the Virgin Islands, used their music every day in class and wanted to thank them. (KICK THAT HABIT and others from Babylon the Bandit and their other albums) They didn't say a word and walked away. Just about ready to leave decided to wait...they returned with a VIP backstage badge! Offered them a ride to the hotel which turned out to be where I LIVED at Waikea Villas!
Since then, we have kept in touch, 18 years and am ALWAYS granted my VIP pass whenever requested. Their last album, AFRICAN HOLOCAUST is revolutionary and all of their others have become mantras for conscious living and peaceful coexistence.
I did NOT put a STEEL PULSE track behind them in this video because "SELF ESTEEM" from JAMES WILLIAMS & ICU fit nicely and has the feelings I feel when I see them today and they remind me of my own self esteem and how important it is.
"Self esteem isn't everything, it's just there's nothing without it!" - Gloria Steinhem
Please discover STEEL PULSE for yourself if you haven't:
And by all means, look out for YOUR self esteem. If someone is hurting or threatening you...move on safely, don't risk your life!
As for James Williams, we were planning to record this song here in LA next time he was here. He'd been recording with Tonight Show guitarist, Kevin Eubanks (recorded their song I REMEMBER from Kev's album SHRINE on my latest album FOCUS) and said he would love to record this one on my next album. Sadly, he had cancer and passed less than a year later. One of the magnificent vocalists (who are boyhood friends incidentally from Harlem Boys Choir Days) Miles Griffiths, is still interested in recording it one day soon.
Enjoy and please read up on the late great pianist James Williams as well.
STEEL PULSE, the music and the mission deserves much more attention. Thanks for giving it yours!
