Roy McCarley 1945 - 2009

Roy Hulon McCarley

Age 64, of Red Bay, AL, formerly of Adrian, passed away, August 5, 2009. Roy was born February 4, 1945 in Huntsville, AL the son of Charles and Mable (Funderburk) McCarley.

His family moved to Michigan in 1953 where Roy attended Adrian High School but joined the U. S. Army before graduation. He served in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Vietnam Champion Medal in the vice 60, a sharpshooter of the M14 Rifle 2 overseas service stars, national defense services medal and a bronze star. Roy worked at Clinton Peerless Gear until closing and retired from Blissfield Manufacturing in 2007. After retirement he enjoyed traveling, visiting family and friends, bowling, raising cattle, gardening, and just being outdoors. Saturdays he loved going to Hillsdale flea market where he helped a friend sell fruits and vegetables. On February 8, 1969 Roy married Mary Irons. They celebrated 36 years of marriage before her death in 2005. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mable McCarley; 3 brothers and 1 sister.

Roy is survived by his children, Rhonda (Fred) Douglas of Reading, John (Tracy) McCarley of Clayton, Alice (Mike) Rinehart of Onsted and Bryan (Amy) McCarley of Ypsilanti; grandchildren, Omar, Heather, Aron, Megan, Oliver, Marcus, Mason, Kailee and Cole who called him "Papa"; great grandchild, Dominic; his loyal companion, dog Daisy Mae who he loved; 1 brother; 5 sisters and many nieces and nephews.


Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian. Burial will follow in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park with Military Honors performed by the Michigan Army National Guard Honor Guard Team. Visitation will be on Sunday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM & also on Monday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM & 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian.
