  • "But Democrats get money from teachers' unions and don't understand economics, so poor kids get crappy schools while you pat yourself on the back for wanting fairness."

Liar. The 1990s proved that Democrats understand economics, the 2000s proved that Republicans don't. And I'd rather vote for someone who takes money from a labor union -- ANY labor union -- than from the energy companies, big tobacco, and the goddamned National Rifle Association.

  • "The idea that socialism works for 'objective' goods makes no sense." It makes complete sense, and you don't know the difference between liberalism and socialism.

"Bottom line: private schools get better results with less money." The hell they do: They bankrupt families, and that's just the ones whose kids they accept -- they don't accept all kids.

  • I couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes. And then 5 years.

  • Toby is such a gem. He can take any issue and argue for it so fiercely that it would make you believe it is the most important issue on the table.

  • @d007ization There's a good article at reason.com titled, "Obama's Hypocrisy on School Vouchers" that has a lot of it.

There's also a video on youtube here: /watch?v=l7FS5B-CynM

  • @darwinkilledgod Could you prove this with a website explaining why?

  • @PeterFormaini They are not given to everyone because Democrats block them... that's why kids in DC are stuck in schools where 70% don't graduate. But by all means, plead for fairness...

The idea that socialism works for "objective" goods makes no sense. Bottom line: private schools get better results with less money. But Democrats get money from teachers' unions and don't understand economics, so poor kids get crappy schools while you pat yourself on the back for wanting fairness.

  • @darwinkilledgod Sorry, but the analogy is ridiculous - since whether or not food is 'good' is subjective - while literacy and educational ability is an objective measure - not subject to the whims of shifting tastes and individual taste buds. And vouchers are NOT 'given to everyone'. And even if they were - the logistical difficulty in sending my inner city kid to a private academy in suburban New Jersey would - again - make any concept of 'fairness' and 'equality' a complete sham.

  • @PeterFormaini I wish I could frame your post! It perfectly illustrates why government programs suck and private ones work. In a restaurant, if you are doing well you are given more money to expand. If you do poorly because your food sucks, you get less money. In a government program when you fail you are given more money, and to the extent that you manage to succeed, your money is taken away from you.

By the way, there is no "totem pole" ... vouchers are given to everyone.

  • @darwinkilledgod Ah Yes - so much better to give privileged kids more money and abandon the schools altogether for those not high up enough on the social totem pole to receive vouchers. Excellent solution! [eyeroll] Normally, in most rational systems, when something does not have enough funding to succeed, you give it enough money to actually work - you don;t give it LESS.
