The hard banks of the Campeche Banks in the Southwestern Gulf of Mexico at 45-95 m depth harbor diversity-rich communities of marine macroalgae (seaweeds), macrocrustaceans, molluscs, and other invertebrates.
This dredging expedition on board the R/V Pelican, a 32 m (105ft) ABS Class "A-1+ Oceanographic steel-hull coastal research vessel operated by UNOLS, took place June 4-24, 2005 and departed from LUMCON in Cocodrie LA.
The seaweeds include representatives of the red, green and brown macroalgae.
During transit from Louisiana to Florida, collections were also made on rubble and red algal nodules (rhodoliths) offshore Louisiana.
This expedition was sponsored by National Science Foundation Biodiversity Surveys and Inventories grant DEB-0315995 (Suzanne Fredericq & Darryl Felder, PIs, University of Louisiana at Lafayette).
