While you are correct in that marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug, marijuana does change how your body perceives pain. How do I know? Personal experience. If you want the full details, go ahead and send me a message. Part of the reason AIDS and cancer patients like using pot is that the THC helps regulate the pain of treatment better than anything else available.
