A look at LDZ Latvian Railways in 2007 with ex-Soviet built motive power including 2TE10 which has an opposed piston engine copied from the Fairbanks-Morse 38D 8 1/8 and the TEM-2which has a copy of the ALCO 539 engine. Train density is intense, with a move every 20 to 30 minutes. Gauge is 1520mm, which is 5 feet.

  • No, no triples in Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia.

  • Russian diesel locomotives 2ТЕ-10М two section have capacity 6000HP, 2М62 have capacity 4000HP, and American diesel locomotives GP38-2 have capacity 2000 HP, SD-40 have capacity 3000 HP. A result: Russian diesel locomotives are more powerful.

  • Yes but SD40 is not most powerful American diesel. AC6000 and SD90MAC are 6000 HP in a single unit, while 2TE10 and 2TE116 are 6000HP with two diesel engines instead of one. One AC4400 or Dash 9 44CW or SD70 is more powerful in a single unit than 2M62 with two units. And a pair of Dash 9's or SD70's is almost equal to a 3TE10 with one less diesel engine. So Russian diesels are NOT more powerful when you look at horsepower per single unit.

  • Fantastic video!!

I visited Latvia in 2005, and was also in Jelgava, I'm sure the car alarm you hear is set of by a 2TE10, as these things have belly shaking basses.

The 2M62 2 stroke has the same operating principle as a EMD engine, with exhaust evacuation valves and roots blower, but suplemented with 2 turbochargers to give overboost, the engine is also more compact as an EMD, although the type never developed further from the 60's, as did the 4 stroke kolomna used in the 2TE116.

  • @dieselmupke The "car alarm" at 7:25 is actually the level crossing warning at this location. Many crossings in Latvia use this type of warning. However, I did shoot a scene at Tukums II where a 2TE10U DID set off the car alarm on our rental car!

  • why do Russian M62

s and 2TE10M's use a small whistle and not that huge single note horn which to me sounds better, and what kind of engines are inside of those locomotives?

  • The M62 and 2M62 when new were equipped with Kolomna D40 12 cylinder 2 stroke engines. Many in Lithuania have been replaced with Kolomna D49 4 stroke engines or Caterpillars. 2TE10M and U have Kharkov 10D100 10 cylinder 2 stroke opposed piston engines based on the Fairbanks Morse 38D 8 1/8 which was used in US locomotives in the 1950's
