Navy boot camp in sound and pictures... Millions of men went through Recruit Training Command, Naval Training Center, San Diego, California, from 1923 until 1997, when the base was closed. Jostens, Inc., produced and Rainbo Records manufactured this featured recording, which was combined with images from Jostens' boot camp memory book called "The Anchor," from the 1960s and '70s.

  • Thanks for your posts, Shipmates!

Oorah to my fellow Grunt Docs!

Yeah, I'll never figure out that one if I live to be a thousand...close SAN DIEGO, the Jewel of the Navy Boot Camps, and leave Glakes?!

Too many pot brownies at the decision making meetings...

  • Those were the days, my friends, we thought they'd never end...

  • Nice job, I was in co 297, summer of 1970.

  • Thanx, Mannie1952...

I wish I'd taken more photos...

    Have you seen RTC lately?

The ship and a few historic buildings are all that's left.

    Kind of a shame.

Almost nothing exists from our Navy days; the ship's are sunk or sold or scrapped; the bases are closed...

    heavy sigh...

    Doc

  • Me, my dad, and my grandfather all graduated from RTC San Diego. I graduated in 1981. I went back as an officer in charge of Recruit outfitting and food service in 1993. I was unfortunately part of the BRAC team for NTC that facilitated in shutting it down. It was sad.

  • thanks, Doc. Company 231, September 1971. Lost the recording long ago but still have my Anchor. Back to NTC after boot for IC "A" school then to the fleet aboard DD-825. Went to see a graduation in the 90s-was surprised that they didn't carry rifles anymore. DD-825 has a crew association and we've had 10 years of reunions. good way to keep in touch with shipmates.
