Bunions, closed toes- resulting in unspread balance from weak toes. Walking with your heels on an incline? I didn't get these 3 years ago to go running in, I got it cause regular shoes were literally causing dis-eases within my body. Balance is key. Symmetry. Running barefoot in the grass or ultimately wherever is what you should strive for. All these do is provide a protective barrier from your skin being scratched, cut, or torn. And after 3 years, my skin is harder. No shoes is goal.

@scasillas1977 BTW, I'll never go back. It took abou three weeks to get used to running to a new way and my achilles & calves were sore, but now it's butter. Moreover, my ACL surgical knee doesn't hurt no where near what it used to. If you do decide on some, spend the extra dollars on the higher end ones, you'll be happy you did when you run on rocks and pebbles and barely feel them compared to the lower end ones with minimal sole, those are good for strict track runnng.

I love them. I have less knee problems and have improved my Air Force PT test run dramatically in the last year. I was running an 11:38 1.5 mile PT test run and now I have cut my run down to 11:19 from 6 months ago. I will say I have been running more and have lost weight, but with that combination and vibram five fingers it's now enjoyable. Half way through, I tried using my NewBalance & it was like wearing concrete cinder blocks. They're not for everyone.

Doctors do not have all the answers, and I'm positive that ancient people of five thousand years ago walked barefoot on stone, and rocky terrain. Remember The Pyramids of Egypt ?
I am running so much faster without shoes, its awesome. It feels great, and it's nice to get grounded with Big Momma Earth. :D I'll be picking up some Vibram's within a few weeks. Check out my channel for updates and reviews.

Your body has a natural support system. Before Nike came out with their big heeled shoes there were not the same running injuries you get today. Before Nike people were running with less injury.
-
@TheEarther Yep, it's hard on the body as well as slow your forward momentum. Happy Running!
-
@tonymuse Haha, alright, agree to disagree. I run forefoot, though I agree with your running style. Why Heel-Toe is popular/recommended just plain confuses me.
-
@TheEarther We will have to agree to disagree. I run with the Chi or Pose style of running so I land on my mid-foot anyway. I would never consider running on hard surfaces in those ridiculous looking socks. :)
-
@tonymuse No, you don't "need." I've been running without and feeling all the better on the road. Cushion encourages your foot to land harder, but when minimal/barefoot your foot will tell you to land softer.
-
@TheEarther I wasn't referring to the flatness of the terrain. If you're going to run on a hard surface, you need some cushion.
Doctor says he has to wear arch supports or his knees will hurt so he can't run "barefoot". The whole point of running barefoot is to change your stride and foot strike so that you no longer roll heel to toe, your foot no longer rolls wildly outside to inside during the foot strike, and you no longer have issues with your knees. This doctor missed one of the most important aspects of barefoot running, correcting foot strike and eliminating knee pain and knee damage.
