My XD45 had about a 300 rd break in period, then it's spot on. I have put about 3500 rounds through it, and never had malfunction issues.
I have started loading my own rounds for this pistol, and have a vicious 880fps 200gr load that I'm using which has recoil much more like a 9mm.
I love the XD!

Same with mine. About 300 rounds and now it shoots like butter and eats everything. I've got 2k or so through it and even though it looks beat up from abuse it runs perfect.

you should shoot DOWN at a target. My neighbor had a bullet fly through his window because of people shooting at tragets above them.

I know this is 2 years late, but the XD is not 100% polymer. The slide is steel and it rides on steel rails molded into the frame. I have the Tactical .45 which is the full-sized 5" barrel design. It is remarkably smooth and fast to get back on target as Kev stated. I prefer it over the XD9 I used to have, since I can shoot it MUCH better. Your mileage may vary but, for the price, XD45 FTW!

there are two designs of xd45. the old one has a straighter handle similar to most semi automatics. the new one has more of a curved handle almost like a revolver. the older ones don't have a saftey other than the grip safety on the handle and the trigger. the new design has one by the slide and trigger guard. i got the old design. it's friggin' sweet.

Too many safeties on a gun isn't a good thing in my view.

so did i, i got my XD 45 about 3 weeks ago, was going to get the one with thumb safety but it was $40 more

Thanks. I guess I got lucky and got one without it.
-

Google Todd Jarrett IPSC Pistol Grip Lesson. There is a short version and a long version of that video. Watch the long version. Gun magazines were discussing this stance as early as the mid 1980s. The weaver is pretty, but in a stressful situation it is not a natural stance, nor does it give you good control over the pistol.
