van halen wasn't the first to tap, he just over-used it and his playing sucks anyway. I always hated tapping, guitar or bass. If you want to use it for an occasional effect, fine, but it is just a fake "oh look what I can do" effect. Playing real bass is a million times harder than just tapping a bunch a crap notes to "look cool".
You won't get hired "becuase you can tap" as a bass player.

I don't like basstapping that much.
It sound a lot better on guitar.
A cool technique for bass is slapping.

wow. i've been looking for this video for probably about 4 years. I learned to tap from watching this video and I still tap on guitar with my middle finger over the index. Thanks a lot for posting.
