With gas prices soaring, it sure would be nice if we could convince the patent holders of this technology to make use of it in some meaningful way. If Germany was able to run its immense war machine off this stuff almost 70 years ago, I'm sure it could make a difference today.
This clip comes from the DVD "Complete History of WWII" ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AOV3O/sr=1-1/qid=1156635941/ref=pd_bbs_... )
I knew an ex Nazi guy (yenice). He worked yeah, he was ancient and not very nice. He worked in these synthetic fuel plants as part of his service after being in the hitler's youth and meeting hitler personally (scary huh). Apparently, the US forces recieved all the plans and documentation for these plants and these processes after the war.

The U.S. military already has dibs on our coal in Montana for gassification in case our oil imports get shut off and we need to go to war so it won't be used for civilian purposes. You need oil to win wars! Just look at Nazi Germany as an example: the real reason why we won WWII was because we had cheap oil and they didn't. The dangerous thing about today is the tables are turned: Arabs have lots of cheap oil and we don't which puts us at a disadvantage.

Actually I found that this process is taking place to a limited extent in a few countries around the world (do a google search on 'coal "oil substitute"'). The point was not that this could replace oil drilling, but simply add another source to increase supply and help lower prices.

My point being that oil substitutes like coal, are not the answer to world wide fossil fuel depletion.

Your point?

Don't kid yourself, this only functioned in Germany under a dictatorship with huge numbers of slave labourers and still there were rationing and shortages.
