My drive is at least 4 years old and running perfectly fine. The sound I think you're hearing is 'just' the disk writing & reading, nothing to worry about I'd say. The fan of my unit is starting to get a bit loud and it's fluctuating, I'll probably end up removing some dust if there's any way to pry it open..

mailed in LaCie support. They said its the power supply not supplying the continous power. Same thing said by other people , and its fine when they switch the power suplies.

Upon doing a bit more research, I believe this clicking sound you hear when reading/writing to the disk is perfectly normal (or at least, not bad).
It (I think) is NOT the `Click of Death`. If it were, there would be a constant click as soon as you turned it on. This click you have only occurs when you read/write to the disk, and is not constant (the clicks come in spurts - not one every 0.5 seconds, etc), from what I've seen.
If you're putting 200GB on it, I'm not surprised it's like that!!

I have the same drive. It makes a fairly loud clicking noise when reading/writing to it. The volume of the click is usually dependant on how much I'm reading/writing. It's always done this, as far as I know, and I've had it for (I think) over a year now. If it was going to go, wouldn't it have by now? Should I get a replacement drive?
I'm worried now...=S

*gasp*!
quick destroy it! It's wire tapping to the Tojo's HQ!
All jokes aside yeah it does seem to be defective. I would be wary of putting any additional important documents on it.

S.M.A.R.T. system present in all ATA drives nowadays allows you to check the number of errors and stuff like that that the drive ever encountered. This can be helpfull to know if a drive is safe (0 errors) or not (repetitive errors in drive's internal log).
I returned it. And the next one I got after that too. Ended up with a WD 500gb MY BOOK.
