Former U.S. Chief of Mission in Iraq and ambassador to Mauritania, Mr. Edward Peck served as deputy director of the White House Task Force on Terrorism in the Reagan Administration.

As part of a delegation organized by the Council for the National Interest, Mr. Peck and a group of diplomats met with Hezbollah secretary-general, Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah.

During the meeting, Nasrallah discussed Hezbollah's strategy to free Lebanese prisoners being held in Israel. He also spoke about the origins of Hezbollah, and recounted an event that is back in the news this week—Israel's bombing of a UN observation post in the southern Lebanese town of Qana in 1996 which killed 106 Lebanese refugees.
One of the retired diplomats who met with Nasrallah in February was Edward Peck - he spoke to Amy Goodman on Democracy Now after the outbreak of the war on Lebanon in the summer of 2006.

  • Mr Mingo:

The Sabra Shatila attacks (Sept 1982) were a retaliation for the PLO attacks at Damour a few years earlier. Maybe that is what motivated PLO to leave?

  • @72Yonatan You really should stop reading Zionist novels. Here's some points for you:

    1) Israel was fully complicit in the massacres of Sabra and Shatila. Revenge killing for Damour is irrelevant.

    2) The PLO had left Lebanon BEFORE the Sabra and Shatila massacres.

    3) The Phalangists were responsible for several massacres e.g. Tal Al-Za'tar and Karantina, both of which happened before Damour. And many followed, including massacres of fellow Christians. Danny Chamoun was killed by Geagea.

  • @mingoi313

You want to revise history here, but the fact is that the person who was damaged in Damour massacre was the one who led the Sabra Shatila revenge massacre, and there was one before that. These events led the PLO to finally leave Lebanon, but they were replaced by Iran-backed Hissboolah.

  • @72Yonatan LOL. Stop monkeying around. You're only making a greater fool of yourself.

The PLO left Lebanon on 1st September 1982. Sabra and Shatila massacres began on 16th September 1982. That's the historical record. Of course in Zionist novels, it's probably different. But for the rest of the world, that's the record.

You can cite Damour all you like, the SIMPLE FACT is that Israel was FULLY COMPLICIT in the massacres of Sabra and Shatila.

  • @72Yonatan If you want to know more, then listen up. One of the main Lebanese figures who is widely alleged to have been involved in orchestrating Sabra and Shatila was called Elie Hobeika. He was going to give FIRST-HAND testimony against Sharon and his involvement in the massacres to a Belgium court.

    Guess what happened to him?

Yep, you guessed it. He was blown up and killed before he got anywhere near that court.

    That's Israel for you.

  • @72Yonatan So stop beating around the bush. Israel is an aggressor state, and its leaders have shown themselves to be murderers and criminals par excellence. The history of Israel in Lebanon is shameful and bloody. They fuelled the fires of the civil war and at times, such as in the battles of Mount Lebanon, they armed both sides. It was one crime followed by an even bigger crime.

Israel's inhumane blockade of Gaza which prevents entry of stuff like coriander and onions says a great deal!

  • Well done Mr.Peck you are wise and brave enough to see the truth and speak your own mind. If more Americans were like this man then the world would be a much nicer place.

  • @72Yonatan After Sabra and Shatila, the criminal Sharon had persona non grata status in a number of European countries. The massacres happened with clear facilitation, coordination and under the full view of the Israeli occupiers. The Israelis were fully complicit in the killing.

As for the PLO claims, they are ridiculous on many grounds. For one, the PLO left Lebanon in 1982. The Israelis left in 2000. Do the maths!

Dude, you ought to stop reading Zionist political novels. ;)

  • Mr. mingo:

It is apparently your memory which is suffering from lack of facts; the sabra shatila was Lebanese Arabs against Palestinians, so shut your trap. Sharon was accused only of not stopping the Lebanese militias. And Israel was in Lebanon to help cleanse the Palestinian PLO who launched attacks from their. Since leaving, Iran has supplied "Hissboolah" in its place. And those loyal to Israel were harmed. That is betrayal which I speak of. You are an "apologist" for Arab terror.

  • @72Yonatan Your comments show disregard for history, factual analysis and international law. But just in case you feel that's overly harsh on you personally, don't feel down. It's an illness that many Israeli politicians and apologists suffer from too.

Before making fantastic statements like "when Israel left Lebanon, they betrayed the Lebanese", question your brain for a moment: why was Israel in Lebanon for more than 20 years? Then, ask yourself whether this occupation was legal?

  • @72Yonatan I'm quite certain that those who skim through these comments can make up their own minds on whose "commentary" (I would argue yours is more like propaganda than commentary) is one-sided.

The Israelis showed in Lebanon how far low their consciences can stoop. From Sabra and Shatila to Qana and Khiam, massacres and violations of basic human rights followed, one after another, with no respite. These continued until the popular grassroots resistance kicked you out from their land.
