@1225MAGNA You do understand the EU has all the potential to become a world power if it truly united? Then some freedoms will have to go. But at least for now it's all about 27 countries cooperating, some of them sharing a monetary union (but not a fiscal union). It's a union, not a federation and I personally like it that way. The EU countries have chosen self-determination over global power. Unfortunately, there were lapses in needed regulation and it turned into a debt-fueled party

@redxenos growth. Plus the mighty pound almost reached parity with the Euro a few times. My point is "printing" money does not solve the problem, does not provide long-term growth and puts one on the path of escalating debt, and in some cases currency devaluation and inflation (takes time though). And at the time it seems the UK's only suggestion for dealing with Greece, when of course the UK is not the one paying up. Plus blaming austerity all the time, especially for Greece is silly.

@redxenos When it comes to monetarism - yes it is different, but inspired by Keynesian economics. I'm not saying either of the two have bad points. The problem is the vulnerabilities, imbalances, and structural issues don't get addressed in the UK and other countries (the US too) and governments resort to stimulating the structural problem as if it were a cyclical problem. Quantitative easing did prevent a recession in 09 and 2010, but at the time other EU countries showed stronger

@redxenos All financial centers are vulnerable to such shocks. Same happened with the US financial crisis of 2008, which also hit the UK hard and it had nothing to do with Europe. But there are countries in the Eurozone directly affected in real terms by the debt crisis. An in the end, every modern country is affected by its trading partners' performance. Yes, the UK is affected by the EU's performance, but take away the EU and it would still be affected by the separate countries,

@1225MAGNA First, I'm not a federalist. There is no federalism in the EU. How do Rompuy and Aston affect you? Can they make you go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan? What did you do when Blair got you to - did you vote him out? And no, you don't know anything about communism or stalinism to think that way about it. And really, what freedoms exactly have been infringed by the EU?

@VWaudiRULEs You are quite wrong. Britain is not 'safe from the [European} contagion' because we have the world's largest financial centre which is highly exposed to Europe and a major part of our economy.
As for your other point, we stopped subscribing to the Keynesian model in the late 1970's and replaced it with monetarist policies. You need to keep up with the times. Britain's public sector is now much smaller than many EU countries.
I agree that we rely too much on finance though.

@VWaudiRULEs Always the reply from the Federalist are the same, they never CHANGE.They can not grasp the desire and the will of the Brits to remain free ! Sure David Cameron,Blair...two absolute disgusting turds determined to sell Britain out ! people of Britain voted to put them in power, and we can vote them out,can i vote out Rompuy ?baroness Aston ?NO I CAN NOT ! but decisions they make affect me and my family Personally.
I hate Communism but we would have more freedoms living under STALIN

@redxenos It's not the empire. It's the model. The Keynesian economics and the failure to address structural issues. Britain's own failing model has a much bigger impact on your economy. Britain is not in the Eurozone and is safe from the debt crisis contagion, so yo can't blame that. What needs to happen is for everyone to sit down and figure what needs to be done to bring about long-term prosperity and growth....but not just for the financial services sector.
-
@1225MAGNA Well, Britain is getting dangerously isolated from the EU and that's not good. The EU has its faults, but you can't blame Britain's failure with Keynesian Socialism on the EU. Everyone needs to do something about saving the EU, because it's the only thing in the western world worth fighting for. Sure, some countries failed and discipline and compliance need to be restored. But still the EU is better than the pyramid scheme of failure that has been getting set up...
I love how the 2 top comments are exact opposites. And unless China, the US, Russia, Brazil and India all collapse in a few years, I suggest we get this European integration back on track, so that we can go back to being at least slightly relevant.
