Stop Motion Animation - SJMA - Summer 2010 (Week 4; Part 2 of 2)

This video is part 2 in a collection of stop motion animation movies produced by my students who attended the Kid's Summer Art Camp at The San José Museum of Art during the week of August 2-6, 2010.

I taught the week long camp with the assistance of Nigel Gully who is also employed by the museum's education department.

Throughout the duration of the week the young artists (ages 9-11) learned how to create a stop motion animation film by collaborating with one or two classmates that were chosen at random. Once in their groups I instructed them on character development, writing an original narrative, storyboarding, building their unique character using materials such as wire and an oil-based animators clay, set design, filming technique, and voice-over. After all of the work was finished at the end of the week Courtney Thiesen and I edited their movies and added their voice-overs as well as sound effects and music.

A reception and exhibition including artwork from the week of camp was showcased in addition to a special screening of their short stop motion animation films the Saturday after the art camp's closure in the Wendell Center at The San José Museum of Art. This compilation video that you see here was also copied and distributed to each one of the student's families to take home with them and accompany their own actual clay characters, watercolor paintings, oil pastel drawings and any other contributions that they had made to their group's movie.
